Russian Revolution. Tsarist government toppled. Tsar abdicates and is imprisoned. Civil War begins between the Bolsheviks and those who oppose them.

Russia exits World War I.

1918, July 17

Murder of the Tsar and his family.

1921, February to March

Baron von Ungern-Sternberg drives the Chinese from Mongolia, brings the Bodg Khan from Manjusri Monastery to Urga and installs him as ruler under his influence. Mongolian Republic declared.

1921, September 15

Baron von Ungern-Sternberg executed after defeat by the Mongolian and Red Army. 1922: End of Russian Civil War: Lenin and Bolsheviks in power.

1924, January 21

Lenin’s death. Stalin begins rise to complete power.

1939 – 1945

World War II.

1953, March 5

Stalin’s death.

1953, March 27

Beria Amnesty releases 1.2 million prisoners from the Gulag, many of them petty criminals. Political prisoners are not released.

1956 – 1975

American involvement in Vietnam.

1979 – 1989

Russian War in Afghanistan.

The Caucasian War: Russia invaded the Caucasus and fought against the Muslim tribes. After victory, Russia annexed much of the North Caucasus.

Caucasus Insurgency continued in Chechnya.

2002, August 1

The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan Pipeline Company (BTC Co.) established in London.

2002, September 18

Ceremony to launch construction of the BTC pipeline. Construction began in April 2003 and was completed in 2005.
